1. used to emphasize the intensive, energetic nature of some action or the intensity of some feeling:

- positively;

- simply;

- [may be translated by an intensifier specific to the context, or in conjunction with the Russian verb by a stronger English verb].

     ♦ Комья земли так и выпрыгивали из-под мотыги Харлампо... (Искандер 5). Clods of earth positively flew from under Harlampo's hoe... (5a).

     ♦ "На диоскурийском базаре, - начал Джамхух, -где бывает очень много народу... в толпе так и шныряют карманщики" (Искандер 5). "At the Dioscurias bazaar," Jamkhoukh began, "where there are a great many people...the crowd simply crawls with pickpockets" (5a).

     ♦ Снег так и валил (Пушкин 2). The snow was falling thick and fast (2a).

     ♦ "А сирень всё около домов растёт, ветки так и лезут в окна, запах приторный" (Гончаров 1). "Lilac always grows close to houses, the branches thrust themselves in at the windows, the smell is so cloying" (1a).

     ♦ Меня это взорвало, мне так и хотелось съездить по его бритой роже, но в такой ситуации нельзя давать волю чувствам, надо сдерживать себя... (Рыбаков 1). I thought I would explode, I wanted to smash his ugly mug so much, but in a situation like that, you can't give vent to your feelings, you must control yourself... (1a).

     ♦ Митя же, заслышав вопль её, так и задрожал... (Достоевский 1). Mitya, hearing her wail, shuddered all over... (1a).

2. used for emphasis with verbs denoting actions that occur quickly, unexpectedly:

- just;

- simply.

     ♦ ...Он [Бородавкин] явился в Глупов и прежде всего подвергнул строгому рассмотрению намерения и деяния своих предшественников. Но когда он взглянул на скрижали, то так и ахнул (Салтыков-Щедрин 1). ...Не [Wartkin] arrived in Foolov and began by subjecting the plans and actions of his predecessors to a strict examination. But when he looked at the annals he simply gasped (1a).

3. used in response to a confirmation of one's or s.o.'s supposition, guess etc:

- just as I (he etc) thought (said etc);

- I thought so!;

- I (just) knew it!;

- I (he etc) knew it all along;

- I (he etc) thought (said, knew etc) as much.

     ♦ Накануне вечером ему позвонил по телефону Ландесман, и Штрум ему сказал, что ничего не получается с его оформлением. "Я так и предполагал", - сказал Ландесман... (Гроссман 2). The previous evening, Landesman had phoned; Viktor had told him of his failure to secure his nomination. "Just as I expected!" Landesman had said... (2a).

     ♦ "Вы художники? Я так и знал!" (Федин 1). "Are you artists? I knew it!" (1a).

     ♦ "Я так и знала, что вы так ответите" (Достоевский 1). "I just knew you'd say that" (1a).

     ♦ "Кстати, он кто, этот Савелий?" - "Прораб", - осторожно сказал Ефим. "Так я и думал" (Войнович 6). "This Savely, by the way-what is he?" "A construction boss," Yefim said warily. "I thought as much" (6a).

4. [used with a pfv verb]

⇒ used to express disagreement with some statement or strong skepticism that some action will take place:

- there's no way...!;

- as if s.o. would (actually) do sth.;

- you've got to be kidding if you think...!;

- [in limited contexts] fat chance!

     ♦ "Я попросил Аркадия привезти мне книги". - "Так он тебе и привезёт! Нашла кого просить!" "I asked Arkady to bring me (he books." "As if he'd actually bring them to you! You sure picked the right person to ask!"

5. [used with a negated verb]

⇒ used for emphasis when stating that sth. never occurred, was never completed etc:

- [equivalents incorporate the negation](one) never (really <actually>) did...;

- [in limited contexts] not once did (one ever).

     ♦ Ответа на заявление я так и не получил (Марченко 1). And I never did get a reply to my protest (1a).

     ♦ Так [я] за всю войну и не увидел, чтобы подбили самолет (Искандер 6). In fact, not once during the course of the war did I ever see one of these planes put out of action (6a).

6. used to emphasize that an action takes place in an unobstructed manner:

- just;

- simply.
